The primary title goes to an elected member of the ruler's dynasty, but other titles may be distributed among the ruler's sons. Elective gavelkind is primarily used by unreformed pagan tribal rulers when they have no other succession law choices. its elective, and gavelkind. your vassals vote for the heirs like in elective but all your titles get split amongst the contenders like gavelkind oh and if you have enough land to form any more de jure kingdoms then those will be formed and given to your other children upon your death Gavelkind (/ ˈ ɡ æ v əl k aɪ n d /) was a system of land tenure associated chiefly with Kent, but it was also found in other counties of Southern England as well as in Ireland and Wales. Its inheritance pattern is a system of partible inheritance and bears a resemblance to Salic patrimony . I used to Love Crusader Kings, but Elective gavelkind is so freking horrible that it soured the game to me. The tribal system and the demand of reforming the religion before you go feudal is also horrible, but bearable.

Elective gavelkind creates new top-tier titles for your dynasty members after you die. It is the only succession law possible for unreformed pagans. It's a preventative measure to prevent Norse Pagan AI from blobbing the whole map. Under tribal government, you have Elective Gavelkind, which is essentially combination of Elective Monarchy and Gavelkind. Your vassals vote on which of your legitimate male children they want to be your heir and then Gavelkind does its magic when you die. What's good with Elective Gavelkind? I usually hold one Kindom, and refrain myself from creating anywhere more than 1, until it is possible for me to create an Empire, custom or de jure.

Elective gavelkind vs gavelkind

Overall, I don't quite feel ready to say Gavelkind is the best succession ever, or something of the sort, but like elective, it has its uses and is certainly the best in certain situations. Elective is good if you are using it to unite your dynasty when you don't have claims otherwise or just want a certain character to be your next ruler, it is also possible to game it and make your realm an autocracy. Gavelkind is not great, but at least it's predictable, and any predictable system can be gamed to your advantage. Elective gavelkind, on the other hand, removes that element of predictability. Secondary heirs may go independent, and may form new titles. Who people tend to vote for is complicated and difficult to accurately predict.

Gavelkind was a system of land tenure chiefly associated with the Celtic law in Ireland and Wales and with the legal traditions of the English county of Kent. The word may have originated from the Old Irish phrases Gabhaltas-cinne or Gavail-kinne, which meant "family settlement". The term came to describe all tenure and inheritance practices where land was divided equally among sons or other heirs. Kent's inheritance pattern was a system of partible inheritance and bears a resemblance to Salic p Gavelkind is also a faction favorite; weak rulers will often be forced to adopt gavelkind by their vassals. For tribal rulers or unreformed pagans, gavelkind is one of the few succession types available. Their only other choice is usually elective gavelkind, which is widely seen as inferior. The biggest difference between Elective and regular Gavelkind is that under Elective, your junior heirs have the option of becoming independent upon succession.
